New College Interim President Corcoran recommends against tenure to 5 faculty, memo shows [View all]

New College of Florida Interim President Richard Corcoran sent a memo to the Board of Trustees recommending it deny tenure to five faculty members who had already been approved by current leadership.
The New College board will vote Wednesday on an agenda item titled "Determination of Tenure" for faculty members Rebecca Black, Lin Jiang, Nassima Neggaz, Gerardo Toro Farmer and Hugo Viera-Vargas. The faculty members had already been approved in February by Interim Provost Bradley Theissen when he served as interim president before Corcoran. Despite that approval, Corcoran had also asked the faculty members to withdraw their applications for tenure ahead of the final step for faculty tenure, Board of Trustees approval.
In his memo, Corcoran cited turnover on the board and in administration, a change in direction toward "a more traditional liberal arts institution," and the "current uncertainty of the needs" of the college, according to a copy of the memo obtained by the Herald-Tribune.
The faculty members up for tenure and several board members were not immediately available for comment.

More petty vindictiveness from this new administration, but the professors might be better off finding another more accommodating place to teach.
