Remarks sent to FLDOE from a teacher friend:

Many of the proposed K-12 Civics and Government Standards are inappropriate and need to be removed. They stink of fascism and nationalism. These proposed changes are contradictory to our nation's democratic values.

The number of times the Pledge of Allegiance is mentioned is absolutely absurd, and is reminiscent of the indoctrination of Hitler's Youth. Saying the pledge/national anthem has nothing to do with love of country. One is patriotic when they stand up for those who are mistreated. We are patriotic when we vote. We are patriotic when we enlist in the military, or any organization that works to improve our communities. We are patriotic when we contact our government officials who fail to look out for their constituents. We are patriotic when we notice that our nation has failed to ensure "liberty and justice for all," and then we work to make changes so that it will. The following proposed standards need removal: SS.K.C.2.3, SS.1.C.2.3, SS.2.C.2.6, SS.3.C.2.3, SS.4.C.2.3, SS.5.C.2.6.

SS.2.C.2.4's use of the term "disorderly protesting" is troublesome and needs removal.

Many of the proposed standards perpetuate the myth that the democratic ideals originated with Judeo-Christian law. This is false, as Judeo-Christian law would have been heavily influenced by the civilizations in the region that predated it. These standards are an attempt to elevate Christianity and pronounce the faith superior to other cultivators of our system of laws. All standards that list the "Ten Commandments" should have that example removed (SS.7.C.1.9, SS.7.C.1.10, SS.7.C.1.12, SS.8.C.1.3)

The following proposed standards should be removed, as they are covered sufficiently and appropriately in the World History curriculum: SS.7.C.1.11 and SS.7.C.12.

The changes proposed to the following standards should revert back to their original language due to biased phrasing: SS.7.C.3.1 and SS.7.C.3.2.

Proposed standards SS.7.C.3.13 and SS.7.C.4.4 should be struck as it reeks of political partisanship.

Proposed standards SS.7.C.4.5 and SS.912.C.4.6 should be removed for lack of substance and its subjectivity.

Any standards that promote the loss of rights should be removed (SS.7.C.2.4 - 2nd target and SS.912.C.2.2 - 3rd target).
