5. I spent a lot of time in both when I was much younger, saw a ton of bands

Everyone from Bad Brains to Maceo Parker. They were always cool about underage attendance, you just got giant black X’s marked on both hands. By the time the new 9:30 opened I was 21.

Saw a lot of great music at the 9:30, the Capitol Ballroom (ugh), The Bayou, and The Birchmere in Alexandria (old and new on that one, too). Once covid is truly over, I’d like to start going out to see live music again.

Edit: and I forgot about the Roxy! Damn, I’m getting old.
