Ginal to push universal health care again [View all]
State Rep. Joann Ginal will make another run at universal health care for Colorado this legislative session.
The resolution, which has not been formally introduced yet, would amend the Colorado constitution to create a statewide cooperative that provides health care to all residents. It would be paid for using state and federal medicaid dollars and what is essentially a payroll tax that backers say would be equal or lesser than what's paid now for health insurance.
Ginal unveiled the plan at her Saturday community coffee event by inviting a backer of the plan to hand out an information sheet on it.
Like a similar 2013 initiative, she will sponsor it in the House while Sen. Irene Aguilar, D-Denver, carries it in the Senate. Unlike 2013, Aguilar said the bill will start in the House to take advantage of the Democratic majority there. The 2013 initiative died before it made it to the House.
