I saw Coco Montoya last night in a small hall theater. [View all]

He's dragging Ronnie Baker Brookes around with him and it's like a double barrel blast of guitar licks. Brooks opened but joined Montoya for the 15 minute encore - a riff swapping guitar battle that stared out playing with no volume and ended with both merged into a lead guitar frontal assault.

I've seen Coco before and he hasn't lost a step, his voice smooth as ever and his southpaw fretwork plays as if by muscle memory on his right hand strung neck (upside down). Montoya writes songs, not solos. They seem to wind their way through every melody as if organically.

New (to me) in the band is the keyboard player with a standard electric piano and solid state B3. Coco threw to him often and he impressed immensely. Then the master of the keys strapped on a Telecaster and blew everyone away for a couple duets playing double lead with Montoya. The guy's a keeper.

It's awesome that Coco has no apparent ego issues as he provided ample time for everyone on stage to show their stuff throughout the show. He's like a blues rock ringmaster. I'm glad I got to see him again. Next year he might be playing in a Mariachi band in Juarez when he gets deported. haha

This isn't my video, but it follows the encore I witnessed here in Kent Ohio.
