Late at night, the diner is like a beacon in the murky darkness and damp fog. It’s enticing with its neon lights and shiny metal exterior, standing like a late addition to our culture. I think it’s great that you call it a landscape because to me it seems like you’ve painted just that in portraying a piece of Americana which is instantly recognizable and for many elicits a feeling of nostalgia.

It appears to be set in a city already dark and unlit except for the lone street lamp which glows as it lights up the night mist. All the elements leave you with a sense of loneliness, even the one figure walking by. But there is also a feeling of curiosity to see who is inside. Who would be eating at such an hour? So in a way it serves a voyeuristic medium to spy on the people inside and make up stories about them.

Thanks! It’s an amazing painting!
