I like your portrait of Judy’s face depicted in such a raw way which makes it what I call a lived in look. I’m very drawn to portraits of faces which are not posed in any formal way. Her expression doesn’t look controlled as if she would probably have it if she was posing. You caught her beautiful eyes and that pixie childlike expression and facial construction she had throughout her life and never lost as she aged. And there is a deep sadness that shows through. It’s a very good face to reproduce in the way you did. So much emotion, singled out by your bold treatment of her eyes, showing a kind of raw unguarded moment.
The lady in the red dress which splashes like a bleeding wound down the side of Judy’s face, seems to be dripping a transparent red down her eye and cheek. The ethereal figure of the lady is casting a shadow that seems to have more substance than the woman herself. I noticed in one of your earlier paintings of a woman with a child in her arms that she also had that gauzy ethereal look. I find these female figures compelling and mysterious. This is a very interesting painting which feels sad somehow. There’s a lot in it and the effect is quite powerful.
