3. It's a famous painting.

I remember it from my Art History course in college. He was the first to paint realistic war scenes in which the brutality of war was depicted rather than the glorious portraits of kings and generals vanquishing their enemies. Now we take this kind of stark war renditioning in stride, but at the time it was quite shocking. I admire and wonder at his bravery.
