My father was in the Navy and was stationed at Millington NAS , TN in the early 60s. We'd ride our bikes all around the base. There was a Ben Franklin five-and-dime store about a mile from the base. Innstead of having to ride to the front gate to leave and then ride back in that direction, we'd "sneak" off the base. In the corner of the base by the base housing there was a hole dug under the chain link fence we'd crawl through and then walk to the store to spend our allowance.

Also, in base housing, there were two large, open fields where we'd play baseball and football and generally play most of the day. Our parents would have to go to the fields and call us to come home for dinner and after dinner we'd go back outside and play there until they called us in to go to bed.

It's a shame today's parents schedule and control their kids playtime instead of letting them be kids and make their own game rules.
