On 31 May 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the keynote speaker at "Religious Witness for Human Dignity," a multi-faith event held at the Los Angeles Coliseum. At left humanitarian Dick Van Dyke applauds Dr. King's inspirational speech delivered in front of 15,000 supporters. 19 days later President Lyndon B. Johnson broke a legislative stalemate in the US Senate and the Civil Rights Act was signed into law on 2 July 1964. (Imagery courtesy: University of Southern California)
