In reply to the discussion: Russia says it does not want a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine [View all]yellowdogintexas
(23,374 posts)29. Ukraine and Russia have a complicated history.
Russia first invaded Ukraine during Catherine the Great's reign.
The borders have changed in both directions over the centuries.
The worst happened in the 1930s when Russia began their collective farming, which resulted in a widespread man made famine in which millions died; Ukraine was the hardest hit because the Russians withheld the farmers's portion of the collective harvest because they wanted to suppress Ukraine's independence and resistance. . This period is known as the Holodomor. https://holodomormuseum.org.ua/en/the-history-of-the-holodomor/
I have read a couple of books about the Holodomor and it was horrible. Ukraine has not forgotten.

TOLD YA. If Ukraine survives this war somehow, it would domestically destroy the Putin-regime in Russia.

Ukraine's best and final offer should be: GTFO NOW and then pay us to rebuild our country.
