9. I had a good friend who attended The Citadel

The pseudo-military college in SC. Uniforms and drilling, but no commission and no required service after graduation.
When he entered in the mid-70s (he had a full scholarship) he was asked which service he would be attending: Catholic, Protestant or Jewish. Those were the only options, and attendance was mandatory.
That was just one of the reasons he left after the first year.
