Trump, the Nobel Peace Prize, & "impact on a trade deal and Norway's $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund" [View all]
Norway is facing pressure from Donald Trump and his administration to award him the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has signaled that this pressure has been futile, with its head Jorgen Watne Frydnes indicating the decision on this year's award was made Monday.
There are concerns about the diplomatic and economic fallout for Norway should the committee snub Trump, including potential impact on a trade deal and Norway's $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund.
Watne Frydnes told Norwegian tabloid VG that the decision on this years award was made Monday. He also indicated in comments to public broadcaster NRK that the possible peace deal in the Middle East would only count toward next years award. Norways Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has reiterated that the government does not interfere in Nobel decisions.
