I think the thing I find most disturbing is the seemingly widely held notion that somehow, if they are gang members, if they are criminals, that the treatment is acceptable or even "deserved."
Tolerating people being treated like animals saps us of our humanity.
I don't care what their crimes may be.
It's perhaps the most fundamental moral principle. We do not torture. Not ANYONE.
Whatever fucked up argument they have that these men can be denied basic Human Rights is evil bullshit. There is NO legitimate rationale for cruel and unusual punishment. There is no justification for subjecting ANYONE to torture, and there is absolutely NO doubt that what these men are enduring is torture.
It's basic fucking Human Rights.
And the American commitment to protecting the basic Human Rights of the humans we share the planet with does not end at our border.
We may not be able to right the wrongs of the world but one thing we can fucking do is NOT BE PERPETRATORS.
