(17,623 posts)Plenty of prisons, said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.
And the Union workhouses? demanded Scrooge. Are they still in operation?
They are. Still, returned the gentleman, I wish I could say they were not.
The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then? said Scrooge.
Both very busy, sir.
Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course, said Scrooge. Im very glad to hear it.
And back we go......

(1,625 posts)... unanswered is, why do irredeemably rotten billionaires want to deprive those less fortunate of THEIR OWN FUCKIN' MONEY? What kind of people and I use the term "people" VERY loosely when referring to the repulsively rich even care? It's not their money; it's not the government's money, it is deferred wages held in trust. As was noted in an earlier reply, it doesn't add a penny to the deficit, nor will the malicious destruction of the government's most popular program reduce the deficit by a penny. So why the goddamned fuck don't they just shut up about it?
Republicans have been trying to do away with Social Security since 1935, for chrissakes! WHY?!!? It does them no harm, the greedy bags of pig excrement don't even pay anything into the SS Trust Fund past $160,000, which is probably less than the pocket change they spend on goldfish food!
There is simply no bottom to their fetid cesspool of depravity. I have an above average vocabulary, but I am at a loss for words to adequately describe how much I hate these fuckers. My sixty-plus years of hatred for the Republican Party has always burned hotter than the surface of the Sun, but now it's gone supernova.
NOTE: This reply was originally posted to another OP on the same subject, but I think it deserves an encore.Especially regarding the refutation of rabid Republicans' lies about Social Security's effect on the deficit. There is none.

(800 posts)But part of the Social Security Payroll Tax is paid by the Employer. The Employee pays 6.2% of their pay, the Employer pays another 6.2%, and that is on income up to $168, 600. The total is 12.4%. So those making substantial amounts of money beyond $168,600 are not really paying much into the system. It is mainly the Employee and the Employer, up into the limit of$168,000.
I am a strong advocate of this system. People are basically paying into a Federal Retirement Plan but these Plutocrats and Fascists won't even let people have that. It is not their money, as you point out. It is fine for Musk and Ramaswamy to make millions and billions of dollars (some of that from Government Contracts like Musk) but when someone's Elderly Grandma or Disabled Uncle needs a little help from the Government, well that is somehow waste or government inefficiency.
And this is after many working people and middle class folks have already paid into the system for years and years. It is outrageous. The only people that benefit from the MAGA/DOGE/Project 2025 Plan are the wealthy and the super wealthy. Any working person who approves of this plan is a fool and a sucker.
