Reagan supported immigration, was extremely tough on Gorbachev's Russia and joined the other living former presidents, Carter and Ford, in getting Clinton's 1994 Assault Weapons Ban passed...

In 2015 the Republicans were going to have a brokered convention to choose another candidate but they realized that they could not win without Trump because he was so popular with the 80% of their base who are authoritarians. So they put party before country and chose an authoritarian Strong Leader who was not committed to democracy. I think that that was when the Republicans ceased to become a legitimate political party.

In a democracy there must be at least two viable parties committed to democracy. The US ceased to have that minimum requirement then.

Until the corporate Republicans either take back control of their party, or develop a viable new party committed to democracy, democracy in the US will be on life support with a poor prognosis.

Those who were lifelong Republicans who started The Lincoln Project, members of Congress who either decided not to run again or "retired," and those who have spoken out, like Liz Cheney who was vice chair of the J6 Committee, recruited by Nancy Pelosi, who has lost her seat, but still campaigned with Kamala Harris - and has endorsed several other Democratic candidates. And then there's Dick Cheney! Yikes!

6. And Trump has about an 80% approval rating

in the Republican party, so 20% don't care for him. I don't agree with their policy positions, but at least they want to maintain democracy in the US.

I wish that the US dichotomy was between a Bernie/AOC Democratic party and a Clinton/Obama Democratic party, but realistically the US is to the right of that. I think that if democracy is to be saved, the Republicans who truly want democracy even if they aren't in charge must be a part of the salvation. Unfortunately, I think that is only about 20% of their base. Even after the attempted coup, when Trump's approval
dropped, the approval came back up to 80% in a few months.

And I'm talking about the Reagan/George H.W. Bush Republicans who, when they cast their votes for TFG they are actually voting against their own beliefs/own best interests.
