The longest papal conclave in history lasted almost three years. This conclave took place from 1268 to 1271 and is known as the longest papal election ever. The pope finally chosen after this lengthy process was Pope Gregory X.
The shortest papal conclave in the history of the Catholic Church took place in 1276. It lasted only one day, and on that day, Pope Adrian V was elected. Unfortunately, Adrian V died just over a month later, making his papacy one of the shortest in history as well.

And when I was watching earlier, the crowds waiting in St. Peter's Square numbered in the thousands and they said that even more are expected...

And the crowds in the square waiting and watching are incredible, and they're expecting even more this afternoon.
