Motion to sever filed in Guam health care fraud case
A woman accused of obstructing justice has asked the District Court of Guam to separate her from the three co-defendants in a multimillion-dollar health care fraud case.
Thelma Joiner, through her attorney Peter Perez, filed a motion to sever, alleging she will be deprived of a fair trial if she is tried with her co-defendants, Clifford Shoemake, Kimberly Conner and Nicholas Shoemake of Guam Medical Transport.
The Shoemakes and Conner were indicted on Jan. 20, 2016 on charges including conspiracy to commit health care fraud, health care fraud, and money laundering.
The three are accused of engaging in a scheme, over four years, to provide ambulance services to individuals ineligible for coverage under Medicare and Tricare and then submitting false claims to Medicare and Tricare for those ambulance services, court documents state.
