Trump Administration: Puerto Rico Has Enough Funding, Doesn't Need More Aid
The administration of President Donald Trump officially came out Thursday against HR268, the Supplemental Appropriations Act 2019 that makes appropriations for the fiscal year ending in September 2019 because it considers certain funding for natural disasters and the $600 million for Puerto Ricos Nutritional Assistance Program, duplicative of other federal funding.
The bill, however, is not expected to be approved by the Democratic-controlled House but nonetheless; it raised concerns about Trumps plans for Puerto Rico.
The Congress should not use natural disasters as a pretext to engage in unnecessary spending outside of agreed upon discretionary spending, said a statement put out by the Executive Office of the President and Officeof Management and Budget.
In response to the numerous recent disasters that have hit states and territories, the Office of the President says it acted swiftly to provide relief. The Federal Emergency Management Agencys disaster relief fund was a significant mechanism through which response efforts were conducted for major disasters and emergencies. The fund has sufficient balances to address all immediate threats to life and property resulting from these recent disasters, the Office said.
