Unrivaled, a new three-on-three womens basketball league debuting January 2025, may very well grow to be bigger than the WNBA.
It was announced May 30 that Breanna Stewart (New York Liberty) and Napheesa Collier (Minnesota Lynx) were partnering to create a new 3-on-3 basketball league for players that took place in the offseason. This league was backed by professional athletes and industry greats such as Alex Morgan, Steve Nash, Megan Rapinoe, Carmelo Anthony, Gary Vaynerchuck, Ann Sarnoff, John Skipper, and David Levy. The goal, according to Unrivaleds press release was to disrupt the domestic womens professional sports landscape with a groundbreaking model centered on investing in its athletes.
Since then, Unrivaled has been hard at work to ensure their league is everything the WNBA is not.
The topic of WNBA salaries isnt a new one. Theres a massive pay gap thats been discussed when it comes to what the women make versus what NBA players make. A few months ago, Angel Reese, one of the seasons most famous rookies, said she couldnt afford her $8000/month rent based on her rookie salary. It was only due to her endorsements that she could afford her apartment and the security that came with it.
Reese confirmed that she received $73,439 her rookie seasona salary on the higher side of a rookie contract. The average WNBA rookie contract ranges from $64,154 to $76, 535, and is determined by draft position.
