2. It has, and I think it is the reason why many people are here: simply to spew that crap.

Too many women here were speaking up, and that is offensive to many. If you look over at Discussionist, a large proportion of their entries are about how women need to be treated like objects, and any women who say different are to be squashed. There is a real Freeper feeling about people talking about how they come over here to spread their hatred for women.

Even if DU cleaned up its act, I am not sure how I feel about being part of a community that has that as a cousin.

Going on vacation tomorrow, so I'll be away. This place is a habit, but hopefully I will be able to break it.

Seeing so many people (mostly men) working so hard to maintain the status quo, when other sites, groups of gamers, groups of comic book fans, etc. are not only aware of the problems, but also willing to work to change things for the better.. and yet here's DU with a resident band of people stubbornly refusing to even acknowledge there's a problem.

I occasionally click over there and am beyond appalled at what I see and which is NEVER hidden by juries. Some of the writing styles are too strongly reminiscent of current or new DUers to be a coincidence. I would guess that after becoming so emboldened, some of these posters are determined to turn DU into a similar toxic waste dump.

I only wish I had an answer...
