(113,131 posts)1. I never did come out as an atheist to my parents
although I made it quite clear I had no use for the church and hadn't since I was ten. That upset them enough.
It was funny, at their respective ends, both came out to me that they had stopped believing a word of it. I know reading the bible cover to cover finally did it for my mother. I have no idea what did it for my dad, I'm just relieved that they both died free of fear of a nasty, vindictive, petty, judgmental, and capricious god.

It was too scary for those kind, loving Christians to be in the presence of one who held a different opinion than them.
