(JEWISH GROUP) Jews were the most targeted group for hate crimes, according to a Statistics Canada report
In 2024, Jewish people were the group most targeted by hate crimes in Canada, according to a newly-released report on crime by Statistics Canada on July 22.
Of the nearly 5,000 police-reported hate crime incidents, 920 were against Jewish people, a decrease of 4 percent from the number reported in 2023 of 959 incidents.
Black people represented the most targeted racial group, with 873 incidents reported. Muslims were the next most targeted religious group, with 229 incidents reported. Sexual orientation was listed as a motivating factor in 658 hate crime incidents.
Even though there were slightly fewer incidents reported in 2024, compared to the previous year, Jewish community leaders say the number is still unacceptable, for both crimes against Jews and hate crimes as a whole. The number of all hate crimes has nearly doubled since 2020, when 2,646 were reported, compared to 4,882 in 2024, while the number of hate crimes against Jews has nearly tripled in the same time frame (from 331 in 2020 to 920 reported in 2024).
