(39,213 posts)That is considerably better than what was predicted a few days ago - that it would take 2 or more days to cross over the island. As long as Melissa keeps moving, in this case it's northward movement, the less chance for rainwater to build up and cause floods, landslides and other problems.
I'm sure that Malaise will check in as soon as she can ... we're all pulling for her and her loved ones to get through this.
Prayers and positive vibes!

Mellisa is expected to make landfall on the SE side of Jamaica, where the most significant and catastrophic impacts are expected on the Western side of the country. The National Hurricane Center says Remain in your safe shelter. Catastrophic flash flooding
and numerous landslides are expected through Tuesday. The eyewalls destructive winds may cause total structural failure, particularly
in higher elevations, leading to widespread infrastructural damage, prolonged power and communication outages, and isolated communities. Along the southern coast, life-threatening storm surge and damaging
waves are anticipated through Tuesday. Failure to take immediate action may result in serious injury or significant loss of life.
Im thinking of everyone in Jamaica and then Cuba and the Southern Bahamas as this system heads north. Hopefully my followers in these locations stay safe and follow the advice of local officials. This will be a generational storm for some, especially in Western Jamaica.

All my hopes for malaise and everyone else on the island. The one thing mentioned was that the storm was somewhat "compact", so the very strongest winds are within a narrow diameter within and just around the eye, but the rains will be unrelenting.

It'll be like an EF-4 tornado over a huge area and it could spawn its own tornadoes there.

Plus the excessive rain -

This hurricane name is sure to be retired, along with the 2 most recent "M"s - Maria (2017) and Michael (2018).

You can see the ERC happen (probably won't be enough time for another before landfall).
