We like hiking up to around 10 miles per day. Really interested in anything unusual or non-touristy, too. We will be fying in and out of Las Vegas (NO interest in gambling whatsoever)
Ideas? Comments?

(146,218 posts)I would even stay away from Zion and Bryce. They can all be like Disneyworld at that time of you.
You might want to look at Grand Staircase Escalante-National Monument in Utah. It is stunningly beautiful and much less visited. There are lots of great hikes and other things to do. Just driving through it is utterly amazing. The Highway 12 drive is particularly stunning.
If you head to Four Corners, you will also see less tourists and can go to Arches and Garden of the Gods.
Sounds like a great trip (and to one of my favorite areas in the whole country).
Edited to add: Look into the National Park Pass. If you do decide to go to one of the bigger parks, it will save you time and money.

(146,218 posts)remember.
There is a great motel there that has small cabins, some with cooking facilities, and a small store with local foods. We were there off season and got a great deal on our place, but it might book up in the summer. There are not many places to stay on 12, which is actually a great advantage, imo.
I'm envious! I can picture it now.

(12,807 posts)We are pretty benign, but really don't want to patronize any blatant homophobes.

(146,218 posts)My experience is that they take a rather live and let live approach, plus they seem to love tourists of all stripes.
But, being straight and not having traveled through there with any GLBT friends, I don't have any personal experience. Have you checked some of the GLBT guidebooks or sites?

(12,807 posts)And suggest staying out / passing thru of some small fundamentalist towns, I'll have to check it again, but they don't sound appealing anyway.
