It boggles the mind what some people will do. I'm sure we've all experienced others' stupidity while traveling.
If caught, they should be fined, and royally!

(3,637 posts)I'd confiscate all the ID's or passports, send them along with the bill for repairs to the respective issuing authorities, and let the tourist suffer the difficulties and problems of getting the documents back.
If an artifact is irreparable or irreplaceable, there should be a 10 year minimum prison sentence, and a sign detailing who destroyed the artifact taking it away from public access.

(93,815 posts)They guy most likely taken to Mammoth HS and put in the brig until arraignment and then fined or given a court date and either released on bail or sent to a different facility. Nobody stays at Mammoth for very long. But they will have to go to the expense of coming back for trial, it is a federal court.
The arresting ranger(s) had a mountain of virtual paperwork (computerized) and had to follow a protocol that is rather limiting in doing so.
The might get some jail time and a bunch of fines.
