sanctuary
once i sought sanctuary in the arms of love but that is now over
after time hope became entrapped in the routine of the mundane
need grew ever greater the harms then disrupted every endeavor
the safety that before enwrapped the heart now stifled the brain
so then i sought sanctuary in myself hiding truths behind masks
trying on various ill fitting disguises until false had turned to true
distorted disturbed objects on a shelf diffident versions of the past
while pretending no one else realizes from which an insanity flew
now i seek sanctuary in the past gently handling of the memories
dusting and washing lost times a precarious pile in vacant rooms
to catalogue the first to the last in ritualistic primitive ceremonies
intoning the fine scripture of lines leading from births until tombs
where will i be able to find sanctuary among lovers heroes or gods
all while living a life almost stationary beset by thieves and frauds
