Autumn Rain

Short days, long nights
A cold gray sky
Misty breezes from the north
Suspended droplets hover
Dampening the leaves
That have retreated
Fallen from the branches
Of the trees in their lost splendor

I look out through the window
Knowing summer is long gone
Lost opportunities for sunshine
Fun and games
Now, I know that winter approaches
With its icy grip on nature
Talons bitter cold
In the darkness to come

Through my blurry window
I watch the rain descend
As I close the book I’m reading
A sip of coffee
A memory of childhood
Regret for the shortened daylight
I pull the blanket to my shoulders
As the earth is drenched again.
