Presumably he was throwing a tomahawk because of his role as Mingo on the "Daniel Boone" TV series. I recall at the time he considered to be native American, just look at those facial features!

Yet we now know Ed Ames was born in Massachusetts, his parents were Ukrainian Jewish immigrants.
