It is so good a song was written about it.

My mom used to make this cake. It was quite delicate, so delicate that a slammed door during cooking could ruin it.

(3,703 posts)it isn't my favorite. I thinks it's a taste and texture thing- it looked pretty, but to me was sort of...marshmallowie gummy and hard to cut with a fork. (And i am not a big fan of marshmallows, except in s'mores, lol). Seemed to taste better with fruit and sauce poured over it.
Give me a good chocolate cake over angel food cake any day!

(12,567 posts)For me, she'd either cut it in half and fill it with fresh strawberries and whipped cream OR frost the top with marshmallow fluff and sprinkle it with peanut butter chips (my favorite!).
After dad was diagnosed with high cholesterol, angel food cake was the most frequently served type of cake at family dinners.

(18,286 posts)They have changed since I was a lot younger. It used to come with a favor crystal for an extra kick. It was probably a citrus acid ball.
They don't go through the extra steps, now it's dump the cake mix in a bowl and add the water and bake.
It's awesome your mom could make them from scratch.
Oh yeah, as stated above I love to toast them in the oven before eating a slice.

(1,048 posts)But I've never had the nerve to use all those egg whites in one recipe, or known what to do with that many leftover egg yolks.
I've made marshmallow, but not often. I made it once on a dare from DH's little son, egged on by DH. "You can't make marshmallows!"
Time passes and a pan of marshmallow appears.
Then I found out I didn't have any powdered sugar to toss them in. I suggested coconut or toasted coconut. No way - only powdered sugar would do. Off to the store I went, only to return and find out my trip was unnecessary. DH and son had decided that coconut sounded pretty good after all. They couldn't choose between plain or toasted, so they did both, mixed them and used the mixture. They were munching their way to an impressive sugar high when I came in the door.
