Tech researchers sue Trump administration over visa bans
Lawsuit filed after five Europeans were sanctioned in December, including former EU tech Commissioner Thierry Breton
A US-based membership organisation for technology researchers has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its retaliatory censorship policy which last year landed several Europeans, including former EU tech commissioner Thierry Breton, with US travel bans.
The researchers, represented by the US-based Coalition for Independent Technology Research (CITR), announced filing the lawsuit on Monday [9 March 2026], which accuses the US government of unconstitutionally targeting researchers and tech safety professionals with visa sanctions.
In May 2025, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio unveiled a censorship policy which he said would target foreign nationals it deemed responsible for censorship of protected expression in the US.
