Ukraine's Victory Is Europe's Mission--With or Without U.S. Help - Econ Lessons
Hi, good news from me, your local Economist, my video celebrates a significant shift in Europes political and economic stance: a growing unity across the European Union, the United Kingdom, Poland, and Romania in firmly backing Ukraines fight for sovereignty, justice, and democracy. Through coordinated sanctions, military assistance, and economic support, Europe is making it clear that it will not stand by as Russia attempts to redraw borders through violence. This alignment marks a historic moment of European solidarity and a turning point in Ukraines path toward victory and integration into the Western democratic and economic order.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has made headlines with a call suggesting renewed economic ties with Russia, claiming it would create jobs in America. This position runs counter to both current geopolitical realities and foundational economic thought. Adam Smith, widely regarded as the father of modern economics, emphasized that prosperity depends not only on commerce but also on the rule of law, justice, and transparent institutions. Russia lacks all of these.
Trump's proposed economic engagement with a corrupt and authoritarian regime is unlikely to deliver real economic benefits. Russia does not offer an actual free market economyonly resource monopolies propped up by coercion and state control. Job creation, in this context, is a mirage. Instead, aligning with nations that respect law and liberty, like Ukraine, offers a stronger, more ethical, and more sustainable economic future.
The good news is that Europe is not waiting. Even without U.S. consensus, countries like Poland, Romania, and the UK are charting a bold courseproviding Ukraine with the tools it needs to win. And they are not alone. Ukraine is not just surviving; it is transformingfighting for its land and a just, rules-based international order. Europe is proving that Ukraine's victory is not only possible but inevitable.
