On this episode of Eastern Express, we dive into Azerbaijans shifting alliances and its surprising turn toward Russia and Iran. As Baku and Yerevan edge closer to a peace treaty, Azerbaijan may be strategically distancing itself from the West. How long will this geopolitical balancing act last?

(6,409 posts)a piece focusing on the chess game that can be "alliances" in this region. Our US media usually does little to cover this region of the world before major events take place so that we can have a better understanding of the factors leading to an action. They typically wait until a major thing has happened and then try to distill it into a 45 second report.

(118,426 posts)I make an effort to post Eastern Express since it provides coverage of events in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Although the middle segment with the interview can sometimes be skipped if time is short, I find the intro and closing segments very informative.

(6,409 posts)watch DW news and NHK but neither quite gets away from their immediate region focus to get very in depth in that further region. Once in a great while if you catch BBC overnight radio they will surprisingly have a long segment about something in that region but you have to be insomniac like me and be awake all night and have the BBC on while doing other things.
A little off topic but I have always loved the BBC overnight radio because of the eclectic mix of what is programmed. For example one moment I'm listening to League scores and the next they are taking me to a 20 minute or longer story about an enterprise zone in an emerging area of the world where small scale financing is helping women start their own small businesses. Then they move right into another long story about a theater renovation taking place somewhere in Europe. Reminds me so much of the "free form" radio when FM was new.
