STUART, Fla. — A 68-year-old bicyclist was hit and killed Tuesday morning by a Brightline train in Martin County, according to the sheriff's office. ... The collision occurred near the intersection of Southeast Dixie Highway and Southeast Monterey Road. ... Sheriff John Budensiek said the man who was killed weaved through traffic and crossed the tracks from a side that didn't have crossing arms.

A detective at the scene tried to get the bicyclist's attention, but deputies said the man looked the wrong way and rode directly into the path of the train, which was traveling at about 30 to 40 mph. ... Investigators do not believe this was a suicide.

The crash knocked out power in the area and caused heavy traffic delays. ... The victim's name has not been released.

This is the second fatal incident involving a Brightline train in three days, after two people were killed in West Palm Beach on Sunday.

Only 2 years ago. Remember Eric Bohlart? Well known media writer.

Happened at the Watchung Station, an area I cross often.

This guy “weaved through traffic and crossed the tracks from a side that didn’t’t have crossing arms.” There were safety measures in place and this guy not only ignored them but blew them off.

If he’d bothered to dismount and get off his bicycle when the crossing arms came down—and I dare say that most of us have seen bicyclists that don’t bother to take one foot off a pedal and look around at stop signs (They keep going!)—he’d still be around.

I am not a cruel and heartless person, but I think that staying alive and uninjured requires some co-operation from people putting themselves in risky situations—and crossing train tracks even where the trains never go faster than 15 miles an hour is a risky situation. And Brightline runs much faster.

This guy was sixty eight years old. Sixty eight years old, with decades of life experiences to form a data base to draw from when assessing dangers. He should have known better.

Did people forget about the old stop and look both ways thing that moms teach us, or do they think they are invincible?

I'm totally baffled.
