Californias SamTrans transit agency is pushing ahead with the construction of a permanent hydrogen fueling station at its North Base facility in South San Francisco, following approval of two key contracts with Trillium USA Company, LLC during the boards July 2025 meeting.
The fueling station is a vital component in
SamTrans strategic shift toward a zero-emission bus fleet, supporting the deployment of 118 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs) 10 acquired under a 2022 demonstration program and another 108 ordered in 2024 from New Flyer. The current interim fueling setup lacks the capacity for this growing fleet, prompting the need for permanent infrastructure.
Under the newly ratified contracts, Trillium will receive $17.37 million for the design, construction, and commissioning of the new hydrogen fueling station. An additional $2.97 million is earmarked for a potential five-year maintenance agreement, bringing the total investment to $20.34 million. Trillium was selected following a competitive two-phase procurement process that reviewed submissions from several national vendors.
Construction is expected to begin soon, with the station scheduled to be operational by early summer 2027. Once online,
it will enable SamTrans to efficiently fuel its full fleet of FCEBs, significantly reducing its reliance on diesel. According to the agency, diesel buses currently account for 89% of the districts greenhouse gas emissions...more
