An eight-year-old girl died this Sunday (13) in Brazil after taking part in the so-called "deodorant challenge," which has been circulating on TikTok.
According to the police, on Thursday (10), Sarah Raíssa Pereira de Castro was admitted to a hospital in the Federal District after inhaling the gas from a spray deodorant during the challenge.
The inhalation caused a cardiorespiratory arrest, and the medical team confirmed brain death after resuscitation attempts.
The Civil Police of the Federal District opened an investigation to determine how the child accessed the challenge content and to identify those responsible for sharing it.
The cellphone the girl was using was seized and will be sent for forensic analysis.
"This case serves as a warning to parents about what their children are accessing, even while at home. More oversight is needed," said Chief Inspector Walber José de Sousa Lima.
Depending on the findings, those involved may be charged with double-qualified homicide (for using a method that poses a common danger and for the victim being under 14), a crime that can carry a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
Contacted by the press on Monday morning (14), TikTok had not commented by the time this article was published.
