Barack Obama
Related: About this forumPresident Obama responds to the "Bush light" crowd
SNIP:
He can do that because he is not being driven by his ego or his own personal agenda - he's not an ideologue. He is a pragmatist looking for solutions. In addition, he knows that when it comes to bad actors in a discussion like this, conciliatory rhetoric can be a ruthless strategy.
One way to deal with that kind of bad-faith opposition is to draw the person in, treat them as if they were operating in good faith, and draw them into a conversation about how they actually would solve the problem. If they have nothing, it shows. And that's not a tactic of bipartisan Washington idealists -- it's a hard-nosed tactic of community organizers, who are acutely aware of power and conflict.
Its fascinating to watch him take this approach - not just with the right - but now with his critics on the left. It makes one wonder whether or not the latter will respond with any more maturity than the former.

Cha
(310,473 posts)She's had a lot of experience in gaging how PBO "approaches" his job. I think her summation of those calling him "bush lite" is spot on when she suggests they "simply project on to him their own expectations of politicians".
And, indeed they might have missed this from the Charlie Rose show( no doubt!)..
So, listen up Snowden, Ron Paul supporter.. your plan to bring down PBO isn't working so well.
Mahalo for this excellent piece, she!

(17,656 posts)I think she is right about it being a hard-nosed tactic used for many decades by community organizers.
President Obama always seems to get them cornered in to one corner of the box before he asks them, "okay, what would you do?" and that's when they start stuttering.

(24,096 posts)Because he's not operating like a politician, but like someone trying to get things for the good of all instead of jamming cash in his jeans.
President Obama is a good man, never thought I'd see someone like him as Pres, ever.
That's why I'm an Obamabot and proud of it.
And Fuck Ron Paulites.

(10,893 posts)But yeah, I always hate when supposed-progressives try to paint him as a Republican in sheep's clothing or someone who is further to the Right than he actually is. They probably aren't aware of this, but they're basically dismissing and minimizing the impact of all of his accomplishments. Obama's "progressive" critics never seem to have much to say about things such as health care reform, or the Fair Pay Act, or the auto bailout, or him being the 1st sitting president to endorse gay rights. Do they honestly think that the typical Republican would support these policies? They've even voted 37 times for a full or partial repeal of Obamacare! It's because of Republicans that we still cannot achieve single-payer, when so many other countries have it and are doing fine with it.
