(101,895 posts)I didn't think anyone would have a military salute (gunfire) at a high security event like that. I understand the pomp but still.
I am glad that the visit was treated with such high regard, however.

(20,624 posts)I knew what it was but wondered what trump and indeed any American would do if they heard loud shots out in the open. It might have been a hidden message - hope it was. Different culture here.

(101,895 posts)More peaceful! I would have ducked back in the car had I not known. But that used to be part of ceremony here too. I remember it from when I was a bit younger but I remember those 'salute' as we called them. But we've had so many assassinations here that we kind of had to let go of that part of ceremony in most places.
A sad adaptation.

Different geography too. Parliament house (I'm watching the speech - Carney got a standing ovation from both sides) has a lot of space around it and no buildings nearby. Parliament house is mostly underground too.
