Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate (D) accuses opponent (R) of ethics violation

Dane County Judge Susan Crawford is accusing her opponent in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, conservative Brad Schimel, of violating the state’s ethics code for judges — an allegation that could raise the temperature in a closely watched contest.

At a Wednesday night campaign stop in Madison, Crawford, a liberal, said Schimel’s comments on cases currently in the court system ran afoul of the rules judges are bound to uphold. Schimel is a former state attorney general but currently serves as a judge in Waukesha County.

“He's given his hot takes on cases headed to the Supreme Court based on what he reads in the newspapers,” Crawford said. “That is actually a violation of our state judicial code, and it's not something you'll hear me engaging in.”

Wisconsin’s court races have become more politically charged in recent years. The 2025 race is particularly crucial, as it presents an opportunity for conservatives to regain control of the bench. Liberals secured a majority on the seven-justice panel with Justice Janet Protasiewicz’s victory in 2023 over former Supreme Court Justice Dan Kelly.
