Sound Transit CFO draws on past lessons in face of $35 billion shortfall

In 2017, Hughey Newsome joined the government of Flint, Michigan, as chief financial officer in the midst of the city’s drinking water crisis.

It was a surprising career shift for someone who had spent decades in the automotive industry and management consulting. But for Newsome, the job was the culmination of years spent building financial expertise while trying to find a way to serve the greater good.

“I’ve always had this nebulous desire to make sure that we can have a planet in 2050 or 2075,” Newsome says.

He credits his wife, Jalonne White-Newsome, former chief environmental justice officer under the Biden administration, for influencing his life’s work and his entire family. Addressing climate change “is truly a family value for us,” he says.
