Yakima County predicts 25% voter turnout in primary election

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Historically, Yakima County has had some of the lowest voter turnout rates in the State of Washington. The county’s elections office doesn’t think this year’s primary election will yield significantly different results.

The office predicts that 25% of Yakima County voters will cast a ballot. The office has made some efforts to increase the turnout, and elections manager Kathy Fisher said she encourages people to take advantage of their right to vote.

“We’ve had many elections where the final tally has ended in a one-vote difference, or a tie even,” Fisher said. “It’s important for their voice to be heard.”

In last year’s primary election, the county had the third-lowest turnout in the state with 33% – just ahead of Adams and Franklin Counties. This was an increase from 2023’s turnout of 19%.
