Federal Way Link could open this fall, rather than next year

Hundreds of thousands of South King County residents could be only a few weeks away from the arrival of the 1 Line in their communities, Sound Transit revealed today.

CEO Dow Constantine stated publicly today that he will recommend that Sound Transit’s governing board vote to inaugurate revenue service on Federal Way Link this autumn, rather than in spring 2026, which would bring the southern terminus of 1 Line into the heart of Federal Way, close to the King / Pierce county line.

Currently, the 1 Line ends at Angle Lake in SeaTac, but Sound Transit has been working on an extension originally approved in 2008 (which benefited from additional funding approved in 2016) to bring light rail further south.

“The Federal Way Link Extension (FWLE) will add nearly eight miles to our regional light rail system via mostly elevated tracks between SeaTac and Federal Way,” its project website explains. “This project includes three new stations in Kent / Des Moines near Highline College, Star Lake, and Downtown Federal Way.”
