Space Needle unveils first double-decker, glass elevator

Before the crowds arrived Friday, three generations of the Wright family piled into a new elevator at the Space Needle.

The financiers and owners of Seattle’s most iconic landmark were among the first to ride its new elevator — a double-decker, largely glass capsule that will now shuttle thousands from the tower’s base and into its head.

“Alright, we’ll see you on the other side,” Howard Wright, the founder of the Seattle Hospitality Group and eldest of the family, said with a wink as the doors closed.

It was the first official ride for the elevator and the beginning of the end for the Space Needle's privately funded $100 million "Century Project." The Space Needle commemorated the occassion by inviting three generations of the Wright family, as well as local kids enamored with the needle and three women who rode up it at the World's Fair in 1962.
