Election data shows record high early voting turnout for Virginia Democrats
VIRGINIA, USA More than 204,000 Virginians cast their ballots early in-person or by mail ahead of the June 14 deadline, according to data from the Virginia Public Access Project.
Of those, 189,000 people voted in the Democratic primary in the 45-day period, and turnout surpasses the last time Virginia held a gubernatorial election four years ago. Of course, in 2021, the Democratic field featured a contested primary for governor, and this election cycle former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger is already slated to face Republican Lt. Governor Winsome Earle Sears. With either candidate, Virginia will make history with the first woman to serve as the commonwealth's governor.
"For many you might assume that given Abigail Spanberger is running unopposed that you might have less interest and that has not been the case," said political expert Dr. Leslie Caughell. "In Northern Virginia, Charlottesville, and in Richmond, Democrats are seeing primary ballot numbers substantially higher than before."
This June 2025 primary election will take place on Tuesday and features key statewide primary contests, including who will represent Democrats in races for Lt. Governor and Attorney General.
