Gov. Abbott responds after congressman says Guard 'embedded' with ICE
Gov. Greg Abbotts office and the Texas Military Department confirmed that the Texas National Guard has been authorized to assist with immigration enforcement, after U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro said guard members were operating inside ICE facilities in Texas.
Castro, a San Antonio Democrat, said Texas National Guard members are embedded at Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, including the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, one of only two detention centers in the country that hold families with children.
State officials had not previously addressed the guards role at ICE facilities. Their confirmation followed Castros public remarks and inquiries from the San Antonio Express-News.
Castro said he first learned of the guards presence from sources who were not authorized to speak publicly. He said he later confirmed the information with ICE personnel during visits to the facilities.
