CHARLESTON, S.C. — Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford advanced Tuesday to a runoff in the Republican contest for an open congressional seat, taking a step toward reviving a political career that was derailed by an extramarital affair while he was governor.

“Are you ready to change things in Washington?” Sanford, flanked by his four sons, asked a boisterous crowd at a restaurant in Charleston's historic district. “I'm incredibly humbled by the outpouring of support we have seen tonight.”

With all precincts reporting, unofficial results show Sanford received about 37 percent of the vote in the southern coastal district. It was unclear who he would face in the April 2 GOP runoff.

The eventual Republican candidate will square off in the May 7 general election against Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of comedian Stephen Colbert. She won the Democratic primary for the seat, handily defeating perennial candidate Ben Frasier.

1. Absolutely he has a chance

Look at the turnout numbers. 52,000 Republicans turned out for their primary while 16,000 Democrats turned out for theirs. Many other factors to consider though like the Democratic race was pretty much uncontested and so on.

It will mainly depend on turnout and that can be hard to predict and get people enthused for in elections like these.

2. Depends on the gerrymandering of the seat

And since the person they are replacing was a repub, it is very, very likely that the winner of the repub primary will win the seat.

Prepare to have another 'family values' repub in the house....

3. I want Sanford to win.

His prose is extraordinary. I was beside myself, reading his description of the curves and breasts of his Argie mistress. It was as sensual as "Song of Songs." If he doesn't win, his poetry might not be printed again.

It was almost as sensual as when Prince Charles's cell phone was intercepted with the call he made to Camilla when he said if he was reincarnated, he would want to come back as Camilla's tampon. Now I don't care who you are. That's a fukin' image for the ages.
