Gov. Shapiro remains silent on endorsement as Pittsburgh mayoral race heats up

As politicians, labor organizations and community groups continue to toss their support behind the Democratic candidates for Pittsburgh’s next mayor, there’s one voice that’s been noticeably silent.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro — the state’s highest ranking Democrat whose national profile rose as he was considered to be Kamala Harris’ running mate last year and whose own name has been tossed around for a 2028 White House bid.

Mr. Shapiro, a popular governor in the most populous swing state, has remained quiet when it comes to the mayoral race for Pennsylvania’s second largest city.

Incumbent Mayor Ed Gainey is facing off against another well-known Democrat, Allegheny County Controller Corey O’Connor, in a competitive primary next month. State senators, representatives and Pittsburgh City Council members have all chosen a side in the race. But when pressed at events on his choice to lead the state’s second largest city, Mr. Shapiro has actively decided not to comment.
