Cortland Mayor Petrosky (R) recalled in special election

CORTLAND, Ohio - Voters in Cortland cast ballots Tuesday in a special election, ultimately deciding to recall Mayor Deidre Petrosky.

In a 75 to 24 split, just over 75 percent of voters in Cortland chose to recall Petrosky. A total of 1,231 ballots, across six precincts, were collected. Only 23 percent of registered voters in Cortland cast ballots in the special election.

The recall was triggered after enough valid signatures were submitted under the city's charter—a process that Board of Elections Director Stephanie Penrose said is rare. Charter communities operate differently from most cities in Ohio, Penrose added.

"They are allowed to recall someone. A regular government can't do that," Penrose said. "Only a charter government in Ohio."
