Fishermen are known for their whoppers. But the one Vince Wilcox tells is no fish story.
On Thursday and Friday, he guided former President Barack Obama and five of his friends on a fly fishing excursion in the Adirondacks.
"The president has only done it one other time in 2009 in Montana," Wilcox, owner of Wiley's Flies in Ray Brook, said. "Apparently, when you are the president, you don't have a lot of time. But he did great. He's a natural athlete."
Wilcox could not say how many Obama caught or where he hooked them, but he did say the 44th president honored the tradition of catch and release for the brook trout with a single exception.
"He never ate one," Wilcox said. "He wanted to know what it tasted like."

Former President Obama visits Adirondacks
SARANAC LAKE It has been confirmed that former President Barack Obama visited the local area this week, via the Adirondack Regional Airport in Lake Clear.
Rumors about Obama swirled Friday, with numerous third-hand reports that he had flown in and out of the airport. People who clearly knew something refusing to speak to the press. But the gossip was hard to verify until late Friday night when NBC 5 news anchor Stephanie Gorin posted pictures on Facebook of Obama posing with airport worker Richie Hewitt on the tarmac beside a private plane. The distinct profile of St. Regis Mountain is seen in the background.
Gorins post echoed what rumors had said, that Obama was here for fishing with a friend, although she didnt identify her source. She said the 44th president of the United States departed Friday.
It is not known that Obama came to the Adirondacks during his eight years as president. His predecessors, Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, both visited publicly during their time in the White House.

(225,339 posts)There are 6 Democrats running to defeat the Paul Ryan protegee (Elise Stefanik) who holds the House seat now. I remember when the Democrats didn't even bother to field a candidate in this district, but there were originally 10 this time around! I think I mentioned it before, but there have been frequent protests at her local office - and she doesn't publicize her schedule until after the fact because protesters show up wherever she goes. I have a strong preference for the candidate who's closest to my neck-of-the-woods, all the rest are from up north (where President Obama visited), but I'll vote in the general for whoever takes her on!
And President Clinton attracted a huge crowd when he visited in 2006 - so I have no doubt that President Obama would get a huge reception - which may be why he made the little publicized visit way up north!
