DOJ sues New Mexico and Albuquerque over immigration enforcement

WASHINGTON – The Justice Department sued New Mexico and Albuquerque, arguing two new laws block federal immigration enforcement and threaten nearly 300 jobs in Otero County.

The United States filed a complaint and motion for preliminary injunction against the State of New Mexico, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Attorney General Raúl Torrez, the City of Albuquerque and Mayor Timothy Keller.

The filing challenges House Bill 9, the “Immigrant Safety Act,” and Albuquerque ordinance O-26-15, the “Safer Community Places Ordinance.” The Justice Department said both measures block federal agents from using local government property for immigration work.

The department also said the city ordinance requires private businesses to warn people about immigration enforcement activity, which it argues shields people from detection by federal authorities.

They don’t want anything Epstein related investigated so this is retaliation to NM for reopening the investigation that had been closed in 2019.
